Dear Sisters -

Perhaps you've heard of the "re-careerist movement"; it involves leaving one career for another completely different career "later in life".  Well, I'm not THAT much "later in life" but I AM seriously considering leaving my current profession for something completely different, and I would love any advice that my sisters could give me.

I have been in the private practice of law here in Central Kentucky for about 11 1/2 years, and I'm ready to move on.  My specific areas of practice are VERY draining to say the least, but transitioning into another area of the law just doesn't appeal to me.  I'm looking for a complete change!

So ... if you are in your second (or third!) career, and would be willing to share your experiences, please email me at lawbelle@excite.com.  If you've migrated from the law into another profession, I would especially love to hear from you, but ALL advice is welcome!  I'm especially interested in hearing advice about how to "market" myself to a new profession ... because quite honestly, I fully expect employers to look at my resume and think, "Yeah, but we don't need a lawyer!"

Thanks in advance; I know, as always, that I can count on my sisters to help me in this new venture!
- Joan Grefer, Alpha Xi (Louisville) '89

P.S. Oh, and obviously, if you're an employer in the Central KY area looking for a dynamic professional with polished and persuasive public speaking and writing skills, don't hesitate to contact me!  :o)

As a military wife, I know that its hard to keep in touch with a lot of
friends from college, which is why I totally lean on my KD sisters to keep
me informed of life back home. I have a few KD sisters who are military
wives, so they are constantly moving and having life changes. I was
wondering if any other KD sisters are married to a military man and would
like to swap stories.

I need help showing teenagers that writing happens in the "real world."

I am an 11th grade English teacher in Pittsburgh, PA.  I have been really thinking about trying to relate writing to things that my kids will see once they get out of school.  Unfortunately, many of my students do not believe that they will ever need to write another word once they graduate; my mission is to prove to them that reading and writing are skills for every job.

What I would like to do is to compile a portfolio of authentic writing from our lives (both at home and at work) that I can use in the classroom.  I will use these in a number of ways: I will show them examples of "real world" writing, mess with the text and then have them make corrections, etc.

This is where you come in.  I am looking for:
1. samples of "real" writing (it does not have to be great, long, or even formal) that you have done in your lives (letters to the editor, memos at work, a report, ANYTHING that will show them that adults have to write in our daily lives both at home and at work.
2. Tell me your profession and ways that you use writing in your career (if you want to be extra cool, you can tell me about reading too) and how you use writing in your home life (letters to your kids' teachers, letter to a utility company telling them they messed up a bill, etc.).

Thanks!  You guys are the best!

Shannon Howard
