Sisters, I became a Delta Eta when the local chapter went national in January of 1967, so I'm just as excited as the current members are about the house, which will open in the Fall of 2003. And as a House Corporation Board member, I also want to thank you for helping us make our dream become a reality.
With love in Kappa Delta and best wishes for a blessed holiday, Jan

[ed. note: Boy, this must be BIG news - not only did I receive it from the CommuniGators' mailing list, but at least 8 of you sent it in to me! This news article is a couple weeks old - because the Porp has already closed (http://www.porpoise.com/) -- Annie]
====
As reported on TV20 this week:
It's been called "a Gainesville landmark", "an institution of sorts" and one of the most famous bars in Gator Country.
And now there's a rumor the "Purple Porpoise" could be closing down and re-opening under new ownership and a new name.
The Purple Porpoise started up in Gainesville by owner Andy Scharra more than 25 years ago. The purple bar has been at its current location off of University Avenue for the past 22 years. And even though the building will remain, some people say Gainesville is losing a landmark.
"There's stuff that's been in talks for quite a while and finally it's come to a
head over the past week or so."
Employees at the Purple Porpoise say they were told about the possible change of ownership on Monday. Since then bartender Eddie Maloy has been reminiscing about his past eight years at the Porpoise. "The championship season, the Final Four all the friends that have come and gone."
They say that's the hardest pill to swallow, knowing they won't be able to see and serve the same regulars... But it's going to be the hardest on owner Andy Scharra. The employees say over a quarter century's time he's given the Porpoise his all.
"Sometimes you get to a point where you have to move on and you know I'm sure it's very very difficult but you know it's a situation I think he's gonna be able to handle in the future and he'll get to fish a lot more than he normally does."
But regardless of his retirement, the regulars want Scharra and the Porpoise to stay just the way they are. "I'm really gonna miss it. I love the atmosphere, I love coming with my friends, sitting and playing trivia and having a couple of drinks. We're friends with the bartenders and so it's gonna be tough."
"I think they should leave it as the Purple Porpoise, it's a legend all over the country and they know the porpoise." And all who know the Porpoise will have until Thursday night...it's the bar's last night in business as "The Purple Porpoise".
"Thursday's going to be the hardest night because it's going to be the last hurrah. We're going to have a little candle lit service here and we're gonna invite all of our friends to come down. It's going to be hard, but all good things come to an end."
"We're just about as upset as everybody else is. Thursday is going to be really hard, a lot of saying good bye to friend so come on down and be a part of it if you want to." And I spoke with the potential new owners this evening. They tell me they are looking forward to remodeling the bar and revitalizing that part of Gainesville.
Apparently it's going to be called "Gator Ugly."
